The Wedding @ Cana : The Untold Story

Wedding of Cana

Wedding @ Cana

What follows is pure conjecture… but still worth pondering…

I am trying to re-imagine the wedding at Cana and the dialogue between Jesus and his mother. What’s interesting is that even though Jesus disagrees with his mother he nevertheless agrees to turn the water into wine.

I am trying to dissect the dynamics of this relationship. Mary knew since Jesus’ birth that Jesus was GOD in flesh. It’s hard for us to imagine the predicament of Jesus. We assume that the saints of GOD could do no harm because they were called for a higher purpose, therefor they sinned not. Yet every single virtuous  character in the bible is deeply flawed in more ways than one.   But somehow we tend to look away .  So it  might seem that Jesus somehow had the power to overcome all sin, simply because of his position as the son of GOD. The bible makes it very evident that Jesus was tempted in the most severe way. He was “offered”  the world and everything in it. Pretty hard to say no, if you ask me.

I cant help but expand on the word “offer”. You would think that the offer would mean a personal offer from a personified evil being who appeared before Jesus. I don’t think that was how it went. Evil lurks within each one of us. It whispers to you to betray your conscience. To do sweet little things that float your ego, power, prestige….  It is ever present till your last breath. I believe Jesus had to live it every waking moment.

But maybe that still doesn’t draw a clear picture. Imagine a superman comic where superman did not use his superpower at all. The comic wouldn’t sell too well, nor would the fictitious character of superman. We like superman because he draws out the innermost yearning of each one of us. The flawed agent with incredible power  and greatness. We yearn for acceptance and so would have Jesus. Yet he knew that he couldn’t draw on the conventions of the world. Jesus would go on to flout convention, but right now he is pausing for the  surge ahead. The surge that would potentially kill him and worst of all, the one thing that scared him the most. Separation from his father.

Mary knows the “One” purpose that Jesus was born to live out. Jesus is either approaching thirty or in  his early thirties. Mary is wondering, when Jesus would start his ministry. Much like all parents, she probably has started to doubt herself. Was she a good parent? Did she raise Jesus well? She is probably tormented by the approach of potential failure. Did she fail to launch Jesus? Maybe she had conversations with her son, egging him on to start his ministry, never completely realizing what she would unfurl on her son. It’s palpable that she wanted to jump start her sons mission. She had to, else she would have failed too…

Jesus listened to his mother, but not before putting up a little resistance. Was he reacting to her like a normal human child. May be he was indirectly saying “Stop telling me what to do!!!”

The wedding started a chain reaction. The rest is history. But you have to stop and ask what Mary was thinking at the foot of the cross as Jesus bled to death like a common criminal.  In the midst of the heart break and agony, did jesus feel proud of having completed his life’s work, just like a child before his mother. Did Mary wish that she should never have asked him to turn the water into wine?

We will never know…Jesus was the personification of GOD, but in order to fulfil his purpose, he had to go through all of the emotions that men were used to. That means he would have probably laughed at a bawdy joke while in the company of sinners. If he were alive today, he would probably turn all of our ideas of virtue on its head.

Just thinking loudly… as I stated… pure conjecture… not based on reality

[Update: Edit]

I am surprised that no one ever commented on my observation that Jesus would laughed at a bawdy joke made by a potential sinner in his company. Would that constitute to a sin?

I thought about it and realized that most of Jesus’ ministry was directed towards reaching out to the poor, sick and needy in spirit. I don’t think they would have been in the mood to crack a dirty joke. The Bible never hints at Jesus going out of his way to enjoy the company of sinners

  1. If Mary knew Jesus was GOD in the flesh/the son of GOD, and knew the ONE true purpose of His life, why would/should she see herself as a failed mother because He hadn’t began His ministry perhaps when she thought it should start? She was human and flawed and surely doubted herself many times. But, wouldn’t ‘egging’ Jesus on to begin His ministry show a lack faith?

    Interesting.

    Good commentary!

    • She was only human and as humans aren’t we prone to doubts? I would never argue that she lacked faith, because the bible is silent about it. Given that the Bible has never been shy to criticize or point out our flaws I would think not. But I think the question is still relevant?

  2. Jesus obeyed His chosen Mother curryNcode because God tells us to obey our Parents and that this pleases Him Colossians 3:20 Jesus made a point of fact it was not His Time and this He knew but God honored His obedience to Mary.

Jesus Christ who is God in the Flesh was conceived by The Holy Spirit, He did not have Adam’s seed we do before we are Born Again, He had God’s which means He could never Sin as shown when He was tempted by Satan. Jesus had Man’s flesh but God’s seed or Nature, it was not until He was on the Cross that He became fully Man when taking our Sin upon Him, this is what separated Him from His Father, good and evil cannot Co-exist or be in Unity. God Loves us but hates the evil we do.

1 John 3:9 No one who is Born of God will continue to Sin because God’s Seed remains in him he cannot go on Sinning because he has been Born of God.

The word not as in cannot in the Greek, means absolutely never.

Jesus has set us free from the Slavery of Sin, we are to put our Carnal Flesh to death by The Spirit (Romans 8 :12-15- Romans 6 -Colossians 3:4-6 -Galatians 5:24 -26) and Aim to be Perfected in Love (Matthew 5:48 – Hebrews 6:1-Philippians 3:14-16 -2Timothy 3:17-1John 4:16-19- 1John 2:4-6- 2Corinthians 13:11)

1 John 3: 1-11 ( 6-7 ) Whosoever abideth in Him Sinneth not: whosoever Sinneth hath not seen Him neither known Him. Little Children let no man deceive you he that doeth Righteousness is Righteous even as He is Righteous.

John 8:34-36 Jesus replied, “I tell you the Truth everyone who Sins is a Slave to Sin. Now a Slave has no permanent place in the family but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free you will be free indeed

Romans 6:22-23 But now being made free from Sin and become Servants to God ye have your fruit unto Holiness and the end everlasting life. For the wages of Sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1John 5 18-20 We know that no one who is Born of God Sins but He who was Born of God keeps him and the evil one does not touch him.

Romans 8: 8 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit.

Romans 8 :12-15 Therefore brothers/ sisters we have an obligation but it is not to the Sinful nature to live according to it or if you live according to the Sinful nature you will die but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body you will live because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Colossians 3:4-6 When Christ who is your life appears then you also will appear with Him in glory. Put to death therefore whatever belongs to your earthly nature sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed which is idolatry. Because of these the wrath of God is coming.

Romans 6:5-7 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection. Knowing this that our old man is crucified with Him that the body of Sin might be destroyed that henceforth we should not serve Sin. For he that is dead is freed from Sin.

Romans 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto Sin but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Daniel 12:10 Many shall be purified and made white and tried but the wicked shall do wickedly and none of the wicked shall understand but the Wise shall understand.

  3. Sorry it should read…….. Jesus Christ who is God in the Flesh was conceived by The Holy Spirit, He did not have Adam’s seed and nor do we when we are Born Again and when we are we do not Sin.

      • Adam like us was not Born with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit this did not Happen until after Pentecost, yes He was created in God’s likeness as we are. Jesus death made it possible for us to be Born Again which sets us free from the Slavery of Sin.

The Old Testament Saints had the Hope we have the REALITY but they did have Christ’s covering as we do until we are Born Again and Perfected in Love, which we are all to Aim for rejecting evil and seeking to do good by The empowering of The Holy Spirit..

Adam and Eve like us were Born with free will the same as Satan who chose to usurp God’s Authority seeking to gain God’s position and Glory. Eve was first deceived but than encouraged Adam to disobey God and Adam chose to listen to Eve instead of God. Yes they could Sin it was their choice as it is ours, God does not want Puppets but for us to choose to Love and obey Him.

        Blessings – Anne.

    • Jesus Loves Sinners curryNcode, we have all Sinned but He hates their Sin, He told the Woman caught in Adultery that He did not condemn her but she was to longer Sin, He tells us the same. Jesus would not accept dirty jokes as confirmed below He does not do what we are told not to do.

Ephesians 5:3-7 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness let it not even be named among you as is fitting for Saints neither filthiness nor foolish talking nor coarse jesting which are not fitting but rather giving of thanks. For this you know that no fornicator unclean person nor covetous man who is an idolater has any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them.NKJV
